Siding Upkeep – The Essentials

Siding that needs ro be repaired or replaced
November 15, 2022

Siding is an essential part of a home’s foundation.  Siding damage may not be quite as catastrophic as roof damage, but it still plays an important part in keeping your home safe and comfortable.  Now is the perfect time to walk outside and visually assess all of the siding on your house.  Below are three things to look for.

Loose or Broken Siding

This one should be pretty easy to spot.  There are many reasons why siding might break or become loose.  First, windy storms can play a huge factor.  The Shenandoah Valley is notorious for windy storms, so wind damage is bound to happen at some point in time.  Damage may not be as bad as entire strips hanging off the side of the house, but even small cracks in siding can cause issues with water damage or entry points for pests.  If you see issues with your siding, contact High Point Roofing today!

Bird Nests in Vents

Birds may not be the first critters that come to mind when thinking of pests, but they can wreak havoc on the health of your foundation.  Birds love to create nests in open vents, which can clog air flow.  Also, sometimes birds will die in there which can cause an unpleasant smell.  If there is already a nest in there, find a safe way to relocate that nest.  If there isn’t a nest, try adding wire mesh to the vent openings so air flow isn’t restricted, but birds cannot get inside of them.

Power Wash

Depending on the environment you live in, siding can get especially dirty.  Now is a great time to bring out the power washer and clean your siding.  Dirt and grime can accumulate on siding, not only looking terrible, but potentially being hazardous to be around.  While everyone many not have a power washer to use, there are local companies around that offer power washing services.  It is good practice to power wash the house on a routine basis.
